The Western Downs is perfect for a quick and easy escape from city life, just three hours west of Brisbane. This area is known as Big Sky country where days unfold under vast, wide open skies before the sun sets in vivid splendour and a blanket of stars appear in the clear nights. There are plenty of country towns, rich with pioneering history and friendly local characters to visit.
Karen from our Stafford Store had a long weekend in Miles and chose Possum Park, located 20 km north of Miles, as a base to explore the area. Possum Park accommodation options are unique, including converted ammunition bunkers used to secretly store ammunition for the armed forces in WWII and converted railway carriages that were used to transport the ammunition and soldiers out to Miles. A converted TAA aircraft will soon be added to the unique accommodation options available. There are also cabins, powered and unpowered sites for camping or pulling up in your Campervan.
Filling three days was easy, visiting Condamine for the Big Cow Bell, Chinchilla for the Big Melon, following the rustic Wildflower Way drive and the Longest Dingo Fence in the world. Back in Miles, there is the Dogwood Crossing, Chinaman’s Lagoon and the Pioneer Village to explore. Karen and her family will be back once the refit of the TAA aircraft has been completed to enjoy a drink in the cockpit complete with chandeliers. First class all the way.
