Deb's Getaway to Hervey Bay and Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island

25 Aug 2020 Travel Stories

Like many of you, I miss travelling and getting out to discover new places to visit. So last week I decided to take a few days and travelled to Hervey Bay to do some Whale Watching and a quick trip to Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island. This is something I haven’t done for over 30 years.

From the north side of Brisbane, the drive to Hervey Bay takes around 4 hours, and there are plenty of places to have a stop along the way. I stayed in an apartment on the Esplanade at Torquay (although there are many other areas you can stay) and although some of the restaurants remain closed, there are some open and are Covid Safe. Many of the closed restaurants are still open for Takeaway meals, and you can always buy an ice-cream!

There are several Whale Watching companies that offer half or full day tours, and others that offer a combination of whale watching and Fraser Island, Swimming with the Whales or Deep Sea Fishing. I chose a company called Tasman Adventure, and took the half day tour.  The boat usually takes up to 100 passengers, however during Covid they were only taking 45 and on my tour there was only about 30 passengers. So there was plenty of room to spread out and feel comfortable about being Covid Safe. They even picked you up and dropped you off to your accommodation at no charge. This was a wonderful day tour with lots of whales and dolphins coming close to our boat and showing off for us!  We also had a lovely morning tea, and on the way back, some more nibbles.

There are several Day Tours to Fraser Island you can also do – some more in depth than others. There are tours that just go to Kingfisher Bay Resort (which we did) that included a lunch that you selected from the main menu, and you got to spend the day at the resort and use the facilities.  This also included an Eco Walking Tour with a ranger/guide. You can also go for longer tours that include the main highlights of Fraser Island, or overnight or longer stay tours.

If you are wanting to spread your wings and take a few days to enjoy The Fraser Coast in Queensland, or wanting some more information about this interesting and beautiful part of Queensland, please contact us on 1300 463472 or email us and we can create a short break away for you!
